Hi Darren and Beth:

I wanted to thank you very much for your amazing parent presentation last night. I am one of the Myrtle Philip parents and my daughter was the one who made me go, and you have no idea how happy I am that I did. You made a huge impact on both my daughter and myself. I have never seen her so excited and moved by anything, your Internet and Social Media Safety program for schools had a huge impact. She said she felt empowered and so educated about the reality of what is going on. THANK YOU!!!!! I do hope my daughter sends you a message in asking for helping in securing her privacy on her facebook page. btw, no technology in the bedroom started last night, and without any arguments. Wishing you the best and am so grateful for all the work you do and lives you save!!!!!!!!

Hi Darren

you and your wife came to Prince George a few months ago. I just wanted to say thanks. Two weeks ago I was being cyber bullied very badly over at a website called ask.fm.. The person was saying things like calling me a fat ugly xxxx and that I should go kill myself. I have to say what this person said to me over this website was extremely hurtful. The bizarre thing is I didn't have an ask.fm account they were saying shit about me on my friends! While I was going through that for a month and a half I would say right after it hit a month and a half I was done! Like its one thing to call me a xxxx but to tell me that I should go and kill myself is way to far. So I was thinking and I said well remember what that "white hatter" guy said. He said "tell someone right away. Don't let it get to far." So I did. I told my principles and we had the police get involved and everything. The thing that made me the most upset is that the person that was doing this to me was one of my best friends. But what I really want to say is THANK YOU!!!! Without that presentation you gave us idk what I would of done. Thanks

Hi Darren:

Thank you so much!  The other teachers and I have been talking about how excellent you were. My students came to class after buzzing about how they had so much work to do locking things down tonight. You really made an impact. I myself can't stop thinking about it! I thought that I was pretty careful, but thanks to you I have so much more to think about now. Scary stuff. Really appreciate what you do. I have heard other outside presentations on Internet safety that were much shorter ones and consisted mostly of showing videos. They were also good, but not anywhere near as informative and impactful as yours. I have already recommended you to a teacher friend of mine for her school. I wish you could go everywhere and talk to everyone!! Thanks again for everything! PS: Today the kids were still talking about how good you were... and the consensus among teachers was that it was the best and most relevant presentation we've seen  Keep spreading your message, the kids and us teachers need it! Take care

Hi Darren:

Truthfully i havent spoke to my friends about it just yet but i know everything about your presentation will be BOMBING through out the school tomorrow. If im speaking about what i liked about the presentation, was that it was very real. Nothing was being hidden and you gave a presentation that no one has ever done. New info, a different look at suicide coming from the real expert. I liked that you showed videos and images and kept the student body interacted and alive. NORMALLY we would be slumped half way in our seats half asleep and probably drool slipping off the corner of our mouths (LOOOOL). But today , that was completely not the case. I loved that you used language in a way us students like but kept it professional, most of the times many presenters will come in with very formal boring language, its really all about the image and the way you give away your information. The way you did it with keeping everyone awake was perfect, you didnt just read 500 pages of blank information like most people would do. You put your own character and life experiences in it. Showed us the real deal, what people are actually going through and what many people in my school have gone through, bullying, cyberbullying, being attacked emotionally and by others.

Hi Darren:

I'm not really good at putting things into words, and I don't know if I'll be able to express to you how much your presentation really resonated with me. It was absolutely eye opening. Usually when a speaker comes to our school, we sit and we listen and we clap, but that's it. We respect them, and we think about what they say for a while, but most of the time it doesn't really stick with us. But you get it. Absolutely, you get, and you make us want to listen and do something about all the shit that is going down.  Your Internet safety presentation was amazing !!!!

Hi Darren:

Hello, I watched your presentation at Nanaimo District Secondary School today, and i don't even know what to say, it was probably the best presentation on internet safety that ive ever seen ! . It really made me open my eyes about whats going on online. it's incredible how much stuff can happen if you just click one suspicious link, or add a questionable picture. Thanks for doing this, ive definitely become more aware about the internet and social networks, and i'll definitely report to you if i see any cyber bullying or harassment going on. Thank you again !

Hi Darren:

I'm XXXX XXXXX, a Senior at XXXX High School. I sat front row at your presentation on Wednesday, and all i've got to say is THANK YOU. Our high school might seem well put together, full of mature kids. Some of that is true, but i know a lot of GIRLS who are just MEAN people.

I'm our schools FFA president, i play volleyball, I'm in my class's ASB, and i've been nominated for homecoming every year, this year i finally won queen! I know what you're probably thinking, most people would think "Ms. Popular" and think I have a TON of friends, and am ALWAYS doing stuff on the weekends. Completely WRONG. To be honest i only have a few close friends that i like to hang out with. I lost a lot of friends this year, and i'll tell you why.

A lot of my senior guy friends started hanging around with the sophomore girls. Which is completely understandable. They're cute, fun, and outgoing girls! But a lot of my senior friends (Girls) weren't going to have it. They started sending out mean texts, posting pictures on facebook and instagram making fun of them. It got so bad that the sophomore girls came to me because they didn't know what to do. I talked to my senior friends, and stuck up for the sophomores. Well a majority of my senior friends don't talk to me anymore because of it. Pretty soon those hateful messages were stopped being sent to those sophomore girls, and they started getting directed toward me. But honestly, i'd rather have them hate on me, I can take it, I have strong roots and broad shoulders.

BUT anyways! Thanks to YOUR message and YOUR presentation a lot of my friends have apologized to both me AND the sophomore girls, which i am SO thankful for. So all i want to say is THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for making the mean things stop.

Sincerely.

Hi Darren:

We thought your Internet and Social Media safety presentation was inspiring and enjoyable, to be honest I thought it was going to be boring and was going to opt out, but I am glad I went. It opened my eyes and put a huge perspective on Internet and Social Media Safety

Hi Darren and Beth:

I noticed that a lot of my buddies tweeted how it was also the best Internet safety presentation they've seen. I also want to say it has made me look at cyber bullying differently, I used to think it was not that big of a deal and I took part in it. But now after today you made me think of what those people feel. I thank you soo much for coming today and I hope you get this out to every student across BC

Hi Darren:

Seriously the best Internet and Social Media Safety presentation I have seen in my 13 year teaching career. Hit home for myself and my students. Thank you! Please check my security settings. And thank you from a teacher from Princess Margaret Secondary. Everybody was raving about it. Spoke to 2 parents after and their kids had already told them about it as well. So much to think about and now to talk to my own young kids about as they start to surf the net on their own. Thank you for the links and thank you for what you do. You are changing lives.

Hi Darren:

We all thought that it was amazing. We have seen tons and tons of presentation on Internet safety and bullying but all of them were boring, some kids would actually sneak out because of it or not even listen and drift off to space. But yours was really inspiring you were able to get everybody's attention and was able to get us all interested in what you were saying, I like the way you started your presentation with that fake Facebook account you had and how you creeped us on Facebook and how you were telling us how easy it was to do all of this stuff to us and our lives, it really got us thinking twice. All of my friends told me that they have changed their privacy settings and everything on their phones, iPods, lap tops etc... Thank you for coming out today we all really appreciate it.

Hi Darren:

I don't think I've ever heard that much positive feedback on a presentation. It was all anybody really talked about for the rest of the day. Even my math teacher who was far from Internet savvy took stuff from it (including the word "troll" that he doesn't understand in the slightest) thank you for that advice, I had a blog back two years ago I used to post all my thoughts on. And while I didn't write anything bad its just best to be forgotten. I love what you're doing, it's like you're some kind of Internet safety super-hero. I definitely took a lot from your presentation, I hope we can hear from you again sometime!

Hi Darren:

Hi there, I saw your Internet safety presentation today, which by the way I thought was really amazing! I've never been so interested or moved by a public speaker in my life, Thanks you for coming to our school, I can tell that it has made a huge impact on the tone of the school already.

Your Internet safety presentation was Fantastic! Thank you. Your presentation was beyond brilliant! There where so many things that I personally had never realized or seen in that context. I'm very glad that you did come to our school to present. I feel bad for the students who decided not to attend. They missed out on not only a great message but great ways to protect ourselves and our identities online.

I thought I'd take a moment to let you know that our staff, students and parent community have been buzzing about your presentation.

The information you provided and the manner in which it was presented captivated our staff and students.

Your upfront approach to addressing the issues so commonly dismissed by youth definitely reached our students.

Thank you for bring your presentation to our school and keep up the good work that you are doing - our kids need it!

Hi Darren

My wife, 13-year-old daughter and I attended your evening presentation at Burlington-Edison High School on Jan. 29 (we aren’t even a part of the Burlington school district) and I was amazed at how engaged my daughter was during your speech. I work in Information Technology and previously worked in Information System Security, but when I try to explain the dangers of the cyber world to my daughter, I get the glazed over eyes and the “yes dad” response. I am like you in the sense that I love social networking (and technology) and how it can be a great tool when used appropriately.

Although our daughter doesn’t have a data plan on her smartphone, we allow her access to Wi-Fi. I have it locked down with parental controls (only email is allowed, all other access is locked) and we do not allow her to have the phone in her room at night. It is still a struggle every night to get her phone, but surprisingly after your presentation she brought it to us without us even asking last night. We also have not allowed her to set up a Facebook account yet, but were planning on doing it after her report card this coming semester. After listening to your presentation and seeing how well our daughter listened to you, we are more comfortable with the idea now. It is encouraging to see how receptive our daughter was to the things you presented. THANK YOU!!!

I have already promoted you to friends at work who are pretty active in their kids’ schools. You are an outstanding speaker and I appreciate the work you and your family are doing. You mentioned that you do a different presentation for the kids. My wife and I would love to attend one those presentations.

Thank you,

~Mike (Parent)

A good friend of ours who is a high school teacher called us up last week and said, "This guycame and gave a two-hour presentation to the kids at the school today about internet safety and online protection and he was amazing. He had their attention for the whole time, you could hear a pin drop, and the students were just hanging on his every word. He's doing a presentation for the parents tonight and you NEED to go see him. He's phenomenal."

My husband had plans that night with our daughter so he couldn't go. And I didn't want to go. I'd had a busy workweek and just wanted to put the kids to bed, have a glass of wine and let the Netflix wash over me. But he was insistent. "It sounds really good. I called my mom and she can babysit the kids. You're going."

So, I hopped in the car, drove to the local community theatre and took a seat. The people began to trickle in and then Darren Laur took to the stage.

He introduced himself, told us about how he has been with the Victoria City Police for 27 years and has a passion for keeping kids safe online. I can't even begin to touch on all the information he gave us, but he did it in such a way that after listening to him for two and-half hours, it felt like he'd only been talking for 20 minutes.

Please take a few minutes and check him out here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=QoPe-skp4Nc

The word about Darren Laur needs to spread. Check out his website, and then tell your school that they need to have him come and do a presentation for your students. Our kids are facing an online landscape unlike any other and Darren speaks to them in their language about how to be responsible digital citizens (aka: if you send a photo of your boobs to your boyfriend-of-the-week, chances are that when you break up three days later, he's going to forward that image of your ta-tas to the whole school) and give them the know-how to use the internet wisely. He actually has a Facebook page of a supposed 16 year-old girl and in the days before he presented to the high school students, he was creeping their Facebook pages and had managed to get close to 100 of them accept his Friend Request, had texted with them, and even set up a date with one of the kids. How's that for eye-opening?! He sure snagged their attention with that and made them realize just how easy it can be for people to be something they're not online.

I was shocked to hear that the hours of highest social media usage in teens is between 10:00 pm and 3 o'clock am. They are taking their phones to bed with them and texting, tweeting, surfing the night away, then wake up feeling like junk the next morning because they haven't had any sleep. Crazy. Darren is a huge proponent of the internet and acknowledges just how cool it is and how it allows us and our kids to connect, share creativity, and explore. He doesn't have an Anti-Internet message, rather a deep understanding of how we and our kids need to develop a responsible attitude towards our online behavior.

Darren has a gift and it needs to be shared. I am going to make sure I do all I can do to get him to come back to our town once our kids are older. You need to see him. Your kids need to see him. It will open up dialogue about this hugely important subject.

I am not being compensated in any way for this post. I was just so moved by what he had to say and his knowledge and passion are phenomenal.

Look him up, talk to your principals and do all you can to help get him into the schools in your city. You won't regret it.

Hi Darren

We really loved it! To be completely honest I was dreading it at first, 2 hours of sitting listening to some guy talk about stuff I probably already knew. But hearing you speak you really demanded the attention of the student body, and that is not an easy task for such a long period of time. Your passion is admirable and i hope too some day love my job as much as you do. Also the information was intriguing and relatable not something I was expecting. Really well done! Ill be thinking of your presentation when ever on social networks.

Thanks so much!

Hi Darren:

Thank you so much and I was talking to some friends after your presentation, and it seemed everyone loved it! I have to admit, at the beginning i was thinking "oh man, another boring presentation...." considering most that we see are actually really boring! But right when you first started speaking to us, the whole school was laughing! We had lots of that actually, which encourages us teens to listen! Then there were parts where you realized the damage that can be caused by typing on a stupid keyboard!! I truly believe that everyone enjoyed your presentation, and i hope that you get a chance to visit other schools nearby! I think all teens should get the opportunity to learn not only the damage from cyberbullying, but also how to protect themselves from it, and other risks while being on the internet. Thank you again, it was great hearing you speak today!

HI Darren,

My name is Sabine, and I am Paula and Cassie's mom (you met them at George Bonner Middle School yesterday and Paula also contacted you about her Facebook security settings). I just wanted to take a moment to say THANK YOU! Both my girls came home yesterday spilling over with excitement, worry, sadness and a deep respect for you and the work you are doing. You made a big impact on both of them. I am very involved in my childrens online activities and monitor facebook on a daily basis. Although I constantly tell them many of the things that you told them yesterday, in their eyes I was just the overly worried mom who seems to "make a fuss about nothing". Your words and experiences will be remembered by both of them, and hopefully it will help them in making good choices when it comes to the online world.
I know Paula mentioned that you suggested that some of her settings need to be adjusted - so when she comes home from school today, I will sit down with both of them and see what we need to do.  It is a scary world out there in cyberworld - so again - thank you from the bottom of my heart - your effort and work is greatly appreciated in our family.

Sincerely,

Sabine (A Mother)

Hi Darren, today you did the presentation at my school, Edward Milne. I just wanted to let you know that that presentation actually had a huge impact on me and i know ALOT of the other students who were there. Usually those presentations are boring and don't relate to us at all, but yours did, made us understand, and actually care about whats happening out there.

I'm currently a teacher at Mount Doug. I was at your presentation on Friday and I wanted to say how much I really appreciate what you do. The message you communicate saves lives and helps our kids to know that we're listening and will help. I also have a 13 year old brother and I had him in mind as you spoke, I'm encouraging him to clean up his Facebook profile and am doing so myself as we speak. When you have the time, would you mind checking my privacy settings and sending me the video you created to let me know how to make a facebook profile as safe as possible? Again, your presentation was engaging, informative and enlightening. You have my utmost respect and I wish you the best in all that you do. Thank you on behalf of myself, my family and all of my future student.

The information was great! I'm actually Minister of School Health at Mount Doug (for student council) so it was awesome knowing that 99% of the student population was getting such important info. I also know that some students are a bit naive (sometimes myself included) when it comes to the internet and it was fantastic to have someone who actually knew what they were talking about show students the dangers that can result. And thanks for the link!

Grade 12 Student

Thank you! It was very different than anything I had heard about internet safety before, and I really liked it! I think most of the other kids were surprised by how much they enjoyed it too. A lot of my friends wanted to skip it, but afterwards they were very glad they stayed!

I would like to say I really appreciated your presentation! It was extremely informative. Thank you for the work you do with cyber bullying and helping teens who are being harassed. Your presentation truly opened my eyes and made me think twice about the things I will post. I can guarantee you that now if I ever here of someone harassing or someone who is being harassed I will definitely do something about it. Thank you once again for your inspiring presentation!!

Everyone who was at the presentation really enjoyed it. All of the terminology and that one minecraft joke about creepers I feel really kept everyone engaged for the more serious parts. As well you clearly knew what you were talking about and when you said you had been creeping some of us on Facebook the thought that went though my mind was " well shit, maybe this guy has a point" and after that you only gained more of my interest into the topic.

We really enjoyed your presentation, it was unlike any of the other presentations we've seen before on Internet safety or bullying. You're presentation truly had such a big impact on my friends and I! Thank you!

As a Vice Principal of a middle school today, Darren’s presentation not only opened my eyes but it allowed me to feel like I am doing my part to educate and protect my students during these exciting but often scary times. To observe our entire student population glued for Darren for two full hours in the afternoon was one thing, but to have one quarter of our school connect with him outside of school on Facebook to have him confirm their privacy settings speaks volumes! In addition we have had a steady flow of parents through our doors and on email this morning espousing some of the “best dinner table conversation” they’ve had in years with their kids.

Darren and Beth, thanks for supporting us to keep our kids safe!

Nadine Naughton, Vice Principal of Gordon Head Middle School

Hi Darren,

I imagine you are very busy so I will keep this as brief as possible. I just wanted to tell you that you can probably consider me one of your success stories and that I definitely count you as one of the people who had positive influence in my life. Years ago, probably 15 or so I was going in a very wrong direction- you may remember me- I owe you a huge thank you- you may have helped save my life. I now am grown up with a career, a husband, a home and children of my own.

My daughter is 13 and I am terrified about parenting her through the next 5 years, she is a good kid, smart, kind and responsible however the social media terrifies me. I feel like this year (grade 8) her social life has exploded and in her eyes I know less and less about the world :( I often read your articles to her just so she can hear things from someone else and not me. This year I feel like I am losing control of my baby- although she is not into anything that makes me uncomfortable at this point I just worry about how to stay "with" her through these years, to guide her, to help her from making the mistakes that I made, to keep her safe.

The Amanda Todd story has me feeling terrified for our children and it has been on my mind all night. This morning when I read your words below I felt so much comfort and reassurance that I am doing what I can. Just keep doing what I do even when she doesn't want me to. Do you mind if I quote the words below on my facebook page?

"Parents; reach out to your kids even when they don't want you to, parents talk to your kids even when they don't want to talk to you, parents be parents even when your kids don't want you to, parents given your child a hug today even when your kids don't want you to, parents let your kids know you love them even though they may not want to hear you say so. Parents, if you sense something is wrong trust your instincts, dig a little deeper and if you can't help reach out to someone who can."

Thank you again for caring about me when I needed you to- even if I hated it at the time.

I thought your presentation really got the message across about cyber safety! at points you had us laughing and at others you had us almost crying. Hi Darren.

I wanted to say thank you for your presentation last week at my daughters school.  This is a conversation that I have been having with my girls for a couple of years, but having it validated by someone other than what they may see as an "over protective Mother" was fantastic! Cyber bullying and internet safety are frightening issues that were not at all a concern for my generation, so I see proactive presentations such as the one you have developed as being imperative for protecting our youth and giving them the tools they need to make informed decisions.

Well done!

At times you could have heard a pin drop. For two hours on Monday morning, senior students attended a special assembly on internet safety that was just as eye-opening for the adults in the room as it was for the kids. Presented by Personal Protection Systems Inc.—a company dedicated to teaching violence prevention, safety awareness and self protection strategies to men, women, children, businesses, corporations, government and schools—the talk provided information to help students stay safe when interacting in the cyber world.

Darren Laur, currently a Staff Sergeant with the Victoria City Police Department, and his wife, Beth started Personal Protection Systems in 1993. Darren is passionate about protecting the personal and emotional safety of youth on the internet. He is passionate about catching cyber bullies or, as he calls them, “cowards behind keyboards and smart phones.” And he is passionate about educating students to become good digital citizens.

His talk covered everything from how to protect your Facebook page to protecting yourself from “creepers” to how to preserve the integrity of your “digital dossier.” Timely information for students who, according to Darren, are “depending upon [the internet] more and more to conduct everyday life, which also includes the sharing of private and at times very sensitive information about ourselves with others online knowingly, and at times, unknowingly.”

A similar presentation was also made to Middle School students and Middle School parents earlier in March.

Your presentation was fantastic! Probably ranked one of the top ones out of the others we had. It was an excellent way to start off the YCI camp as well. I really loved how much emotion you put into your speeches and presentation. Many of us were very into your topics because we could really relate and learn from what you were saying. Personally, your presentation was one of the best for me.

This morning I had the pleasure of viewing a presentation on "Internet Safety" by Darren of 'Personal Protection Systems'.  I have taught Information Technology for many years, from grades 4 to 9, and am deeply immersed in social media both on and off the job.  I was admittedly a little jaded going into Darren's presentation, having been told before by "experts" how to keep kids safe online.  What is different about Darren's approach is that he actually does know the culture of these kids.  Adults often make the mistake of thinking that this generation (mistakenly referred to as "digital natives") have a solid grasp of technology and how to maneuver  on the Internet.  Darren points out a number of fallacies in this line of thought, and in fact it is their fearlessness that creates dangerous situations. The audience this morning consisted of over 600 11 to 15 year olds.  They sat for almost 2 hours, riveted by what Darren had to say.  It is clear from the start of his presentation that he is sincere, invested and extremely knowledgeable. The message for me was especially validating, and will be one that I will continue to share with my students. If I had to sum up my thoughts about Darren's presentation, I would choose the words Frank, Authentic and Critically Important.

Darren:

I went into  our den at home the other day and there was a blank  yellow post it note sticking up from the upper edge of the lap top screen. I didn't think much of it  - I figured my wife had  left it there as a reminder for something. Then she asked me the other day if I had been finding any of these on the computer - I told her I had and figured she had left a reminder for herself. However I learned  the real reason they have been there  is that my 14 year old daughter got very "creeped out"  by one of your lectures last year and is now worried that some pervert will hack the computer while she is on it and obtain a photo of her  - so she puts the yellow sticky over the built in lens to prevent this (not sure if this was your advice or she figured that part out on her own).

I remember back at the time of your presentation that  you made quite an impression on her  - I  just didn't realize it was going to be a lasting impression. Thank You !!!!!!

Hi Darren and Beth!

Thank you so very much for the powerful and educational presentations on Internet and Social Media Safety to our kids and parents! It was outstanding and I am so grateful to have heard about your program. I think it's safe to say it was enlightening for all and quite possibly life changing for some. I look forward to hearing you speak again in the future.

It is obvious how passionate you are about what you do and it comes through loud and clear to those listening. All I can say is thank goodness there are "white hatters" like you looking out for our kids!

Thanks again!

Hey Darren, your presentation at Barsby the other day was awesome. I thought it was gonna be another boring presentation about Internet Safety and cyber bullying, but you made it rad. I think its pree awesome what you do, so... thank you!!

Hi Darren…..Your Internet presentation was, quite literally, the best assembly I ever had the pleasure of listening to. I think it's going to stick in our minds for a long time.

Hi Darren and Beth,

Thank you so much for your two Internet presentations yesterday. The feedback I have received from students, staff and parents has been incredible. I will be sharing this information with our other principals. Please let me know if you need a ‘plug’ from a principal. I would be happy to speak about your presentation with any interested folks.

Thanks again Darren and Beth,

Man, I loved your presentation at ESQ High. Keep doin' what you're doin', 'cause you're protecting a lot of people. When I heard we were going to see a presentation on internet safety I said "I already know everything; I'm not stupid." But wow, I certaintly didn't know everything. I'm really glad you came to our school.  You were really funny and just plain awesome. And I also really like how you're so adamant on stopping cyber bullying and suicide. I'm the same way, honestly. But what really erks me is the people who commit suicide because of homophobia. ESQ's Gay/Straight Alliance and I have sent out numerous condolence letters to families because it really does affect us… Pardon my massive message, but really, you're doing awesome things and informing people on internet safety. Bravo to you and your wife!  Keep it up, white hatter!

Hi, im from Claremont, and i saw your Internet presentation today. I just wanted you to know that you did a really good job, and thank you for taking the time to teach teens about this. Me and my friends defiantly benefited from it!

Hi ….. I'm a student at Claremont and I was able to watch your Internet presentation yesterday... I just wanted to say a huge thank you for opening my eyes to the importance of internet safety and cyber bullying. I really enjoyed your presentation!

Hi Darren!

You're Internet presentation completely blew me away! I feel so lucky to have been there to learn and listen in. What you do is amazing, and thank you.

Hi Darren! I just wanted to say that your Internet presentation today at Esquimalt High School was absolutely amazing! It was extremely powerful and really opened my eyes to alot of things. You found a way to keep me interested for a 2 hour presentation and not have it boring at all and not many people can do that.  I almost also started crying during the teen suicide part. It was very touching and made me want to do something to help the people who are affected by cyber bullying. I hope you continue on to open other students eyes about this because it opened mine for sure and I'm happy I learned more about the dangers and stuff. So thank you so much again

The Internet presentation today was wonderful. Thank you for coming. I really liked how you tailored it so well to your audience (your diction, your manner which you talked with us), I think that it got through to a lot of people. On a personal note, cyberbullying is an issue really close to heart and so I always appreciate when people bring up awareness, especially for this as it is the new age and thus a new method of communication (or bullying in this case). Thanks again, and keep doing what you're doing.

Quinn (High School Student)

Esquimalt High School

Thank you so much for the Internet presentation at my school today. I really learned a lot about internet and text safety. I know people who have gone through cyber bullying and sext spreading and know i know how bad it is. i will be a lot more carefull what i post online now!
Thanx!!!

Bryn M (High School Student)

Today the whole grade 10 class was given a internet safety talk. This was probably the most interesting talk i have ever listened to. Like a lot of students when i first heard from the teachers it was a talk on cyber bullying i was like oh whatever we have listened to these since we were in grade 5... this was completely different. I don't think any person could walk away from it without a changed perspective. We all walked out of there in awe. All of my friends and I have combed through our friends making sure we knew all of them. Thank you for coming to our school today

Cailyn W. (High School Student)

I want to thank Darren and his team for coming to the school where I was subbing at.  I was blown away with how professional their presentation was but also how much the presentation impacted me and my students.  I believe it is necessary for ALL students to understand the impact the Internet has on our lives, but also the dangers that it can create.  Creating awareness is challenging for certain topics.  But Darren NAILED the presentation and really made you think about your actions with the Internet.  It is inevitable that all of our students will be impacted by their Internet use.  Darren's goal is to ensure that the interactions are safe and positive.  Thank you for making me think about my Internet use and teaching me ways to protect myself and helping my students do the same.

My students were certainly buzzing after your presentation and I heard from many students that this was the "the best assembly we've been to".  I was expecting nothing less, after seeing you two years agao at Glanford, and wasn't disappointed ! I was particularly impressed to see how you had updated your presentation to include current issues surrounding "sexting" and "Omegle".  In preparation for your presentation, we had done an anonymous survey in my class, that indicated that out of a class of 29 grade 7 students, at leat 4 were already experimenting with Omegle and a number said that they had gone to meet people that they had met online.  It made a profound impression on my students when you commented on both issues so powerfully. At Central, we have talked about hosting your presentation once every two years to ensure that every student that goes through the school gets the information at least once.  I have also talked up your presentation with staff from other schools.  While I know of some teachers and administrators that are doing an admirable job of intervening when conflicts involving cyber-bullying and sexting come up,  it seems to me that schools are not yet very well equipped to deal with the preventative side of online safety that your program covers so very well. Thanks again for offering such an important and powerful service to Central and I'll look forward to seeing your presentation again in the future !

My name is Andy Olsen and I am the chairman of the technology committee at Shawnigan Lake School and currently doing my Masters in Educational Technology.  I just wanted to lend my support for the Internet  presentation as it has been one of the most valuable things our students have been part of this year.  In my studies, it has become apparent that the education of our students in becoming better technology citizens has got to become a priority for schools.  While some of this can be done by staff members within your school community, it was even more powerful coming from a member of law enforcement who knows all of the intricacies of how students are conducting themselves online.  We felt the need to have Darren come not only for our students, but also for our staff and parent association.  We will be having them back again next September when our new students arrive.

Shawnigan Lake School

The presentation you gave at our school today was an amazing experience.  Not only did you educate the students, teachers, and administrators on Internet safety, but you were also very engaging.  To be able to hold the interest of 600+ students for a full TWO HOURS was admirable.  I believe you did so as your message is so relevant and important to our everyday lives.  When you announced how you had social engineered our student base you had our students hooked to your message.  Our students realized how exposed they have left themselves.  I'm convinced that your words and videos about cyber bullying will save many people undeserved pain.  I wish every school in our country would have the pleasure of your presentation.  The message is one all students, parents and educators should hear.  You moved my students and me Profoundly.

Chantelle Huynh (High School Teacher)

Hi, today you gave my school an Internet safety talk, and I would like to say that it was very great information.  I have been a victim of cyber bullying and every now and then it still happens to me.  I let my parents know, but now I know how to deal with it because of you.  Thanks for the talk that you gave to us.

Lauren M (Jr High School student)

I would just like to say thank you for coming to our highshool yeterday, your Internet presentation was absolutely fantastic! I have been keeping an eye on my friends Facebooks, and they are all saying that they loved your presentation, and that they had all changed thier privacy settings as you suggested.  What you shared with us was truly an eye opener, and I think that is exactly what our highschool needed.  I hope you continue to come back in the years to come, as it was truly a wonderful thing that you do !!!!!!

Megan N (Sr High School student)

Thank you so much for coming to NDSS today, it was a real eye opner, I never knew how much I was being watched while in Facebook.  I have always been careful with what I do on-line, but now I am even more aware.  The presentation that you do is so incredibly interesting and I am so glad you are bringing awareness to the highschools.  Thanks again.

Natasha K (Sr High School student)

Thank you so much for the Internet presentation at our school today.  No one could have gotten that point across better.  I think that it was a real eye opener to a lot of my fellow students.  Thanks again.

Matthew B (Jr High School Student)

Hi, you spoke at my school earlier this week and I just wanted to say thank you.  I haven't had any personal experiences with most of the things you talked about but it still touched me, and I needed you to know that.

Tori R (Sr High School student)

I go to shoreline and I saw your presentaiton today.  I want to say thank you.  I have been cyber bullied before and today's presentation was inspiring. THANK YOU !!!!!!!!

Georgia (Jr High school student)

Hi, I go to Dunsmuir and I thought that your presentaion on Internet safety yesterday was phenominal !!!!!! It moved me so much as I have been personally cyber bullied.  I just wanted to say "great job yesterday"

Kaeleigh G (Jr High school student)

Hello, just wanted to say thank you for your Internet safety presentation.  It has been quite the topic in our school and in our house since your presentation.  It is my hope that you continue with your message.  I sent our principal of our school a note saying how effective your presentation was.  Please follow-up with other schools.

Spencer B (Jr High school student)

Hello you were at my school today and i just wanted to say how much you have inspired me to take all these cautions and see what people are like now a days, basically I just wanted to say you did an amazing job today at our school !!!!!!!

Hunter L (Jr High school student)

We had a great supper-time conversation about your Internet presentation last night; it was really impactful.  Teenagers are a difficult demographic to engage with so the fact that your were able to get through speaks volumes about your skills and eperieince.  Thank you for the excellent work you and Beth do.

An appreciative parent

Hello Darren and Beth

Here is an email I received today from a parent.  This is just one example of the phenomenal feedbacks that we have been receiving from kids, staff and parents.  Thank you !!!!!

All The Best

Jill Bailey

School District 68

I had a wonderful conversation with my daughters yesterday who were simply "lit up" about the Facebook safety learning session at their school.  I wanted to pass on this feedback as it sounded like the school assembly accomplished its purpose; 1) they had a two hour learning experience that captured their attention for the entirety of the session, my daughter even said she kept looking at the clock and wishing it would slow down (fantastic!); 2) my girls actually came home and immediately made the changes to their Facebook accounts that Darren suggested. (I had been asking them for months to ensure they were using Facebook safely)

Darren was able to get the Safety message across in such a way that it was truly meaningful to the students and wasn't simply more adult rhetoric tha normally gets waived off.  I was thoroughly impressed by what I heard, and honestly believe this session has ensured better safety for the students who attended.  So from my husband and from me.....thank you! I hope you will be able to share this Darren who was the presenter.

Kind Regards

Sarah Kowalenko (Parent)

Hi Darren:

I am a reality based self defence instructor here in New Zealand.

I just wanted to say that your sebsite is brilliant and I applaud you for sharing your thoughts, opinions, experiences and research.  Having been a martial artist who crosses trained in BJJ and then went onto opening my mind and seeing the flaws of my own training, I am glad that we have likeminded people like yourslef to converse with.  Many of the names you have listed as having influenced your own work I too have studied their martial ideas.

Once again, thaks for allowing "free" access to the material you have posted on your site.  People's lives will be saved as a result I have no doubt.

Shaun Nicholson

Your Internet safety seminar for students was honestly the best presentation I've ever been to.  Thanks so much for coming to our school, and you made it really interesting too! I was engrossed in every bit of your presentation and just to let you know, I'll keep an eye out for cyberbullying because I agree it's not right.  It was terrible seeing those my age who had resorted to ending their lives and we can't let it come to that.  Thanks again, you were GREAT !!!!!

Julia T (Ladysmith Secondary School grade 11 student)

Hi Darren. Thank you again for sharing such useful information with all of the St Joseph School families.  Our Children practised their "temper tantrums" this morning (because we asked them).  I also overheard them roleplaying in free play yesterday a scene where someone asked for their parent's full name and they refused.  Obviously your workshop made an impact...........

Dr. Tamara E Goranson, R. Psych.

The Time spent in this course may have been the most valuable 3 hours of my life.  Thank you for arranging this for us.  Darren's expertise and style made this one of the most engaging presentations I've attended.  His keep real approach was so very refreshing.  He did not pretty up the ugly subject matter and I personally appreciated that.  The Be Aware theme could not have been made more clear, which shows its importance.  The things I learned to do if I ever find myself in a situation, will stick with me but I hope I never need to use them.

Jennifer McGarvie, Ministry Worker

On health and wellness day, two of the many guest speakers were Darren Laur and his wife, Beth Laur. Darren is a police officer for the Victoria Police, and also teaches classes on personal and internet safety. They travel around to various schools and work places teaching classes on how to avoid dangerous situations. The vision of Darren and Beth is to "promote awareness and safety and to excel in everything we do as a company." They have both written many books on personal safety such as: Enlighten Not Frighten, Total Awareness: A Woman’s Safety Book, and Internet Safety 101. These two people are making a huge difference around British Columbia among youths and adults. Darren talked about what to do if you ever get in a situation where you are being threatened, or someone is trying to get something from you. Some things that people do unconsciously that make them more vulnerable victims are: walking with your head down, losing eye contact with people who approach you, listening to music and reading or texting while walking. Strategies to ensure that you won't be a victim could be walking confidently with your head up, checking your surroundings constantly making brief eye contact with everyone, stop and lean against a building if you have to text, and listening to your music with only one headphone in. Many of the reasons that some people become victims of harsh crimes are because they are too embarrassed to do what they are suppose to. A tip that Darren gave us was that if you are wearing a long skirt, or long jacket and are being threatened then lift it up high and run, many people don’t do that because they are too embarrassed. Listening to this speaker helped many of us to consider our actions so that we don't become the future victims of street crimes.

Meghan B., grade 12, Strathcona House, Shawnigan Lake School

“I attended the Wishart School “Safe Kids for Parents” seminar and I would like to say how much I appreciated the information that you taught us. I feel much more empowered and confident that I can teach my sons how to stay safe, which in turn will empower my boys to feel confident to handle themselves in a variety of situations: be it with an adult predator or with the day to day peer pressure I know they will encounter.”

Sincerely, Sarah Melanson

“I just wanted to say thank you very much for the wonderful presentation (Verbal and Physical Management of Aggressive and Violent Behaviour in the Workplace) last night. All the staff who attended were very happy with the content and the way in which it was presented. I believe it appealed to them because it was REAL!!!!! I cannot emphasize that enough. We have had many instructors come through the Hotel, but Darren brought both practicality and humour to a topic that we have not seen before. Thank you again, and we will be scheduling another presentation sooner rather than later! I will also recommend this to all my HR contacts in other Hotels.”

“I wanted to say thank you for the seminar (Safe Kids For Parents) that you held at Lakewood Elementary last evening. I was impressed and enlightened. Before I knew it 2 hours was up and it was time to go. What an amazingly talented speaker. Thank you, I learned alot. We’ll be back.”

“I had the privilege of attending the personal safety seminar at St. Anne’s last week, therefore I won’t need to register for an upcoming session.

That said, I would like to take this opportunity to provide a little feedback.

Darren Laur did not ask us to complete an evaluation form, however, in my judgement this was one of the most dynamic and engaging training sessions I have ever attended. As an award-winning public speaker with decades of experience before an audience, I was extremely impressed by Darren’s knowledge of his subject, passion for his message, and considerable talent for presentation - notwithstanding the highly sensitive and controversial nature of the material.

In short: I laughed, I cried, and most importantly, I learned. (Thank you Darren.)”

Tamara Malczewska

“I really enjoyed the seminar on Thursday night. The info was relevant and very informative. I was a little concerned going into the seminar that it was going to be dry and boring but not the case at all. Darren had my attention the entire 3 hours. I am glad that I decided to go at the last minute. Thanks to you Darren!”

Tracey Berends

“All of the Youth Center staff attended including both Programmers and Area Programmer which demonstrated a belief in the importance of the training, We all found the topics relevant, the responses realistic and the tools useful and pertinent beyond any other “security” training we have had. Darren was informative while being real, entertaining and anecdotal. His presence and delivery embodied everything he was telling us which made the time fly in a productive way.”

Gaileen Flaman

“Darren was awesome. He is a terrific speaker and presenter. The information he presented was very interesting and gave us good knowledge. Thank you very much for organizing this seminar.”

Diane Bowers

“I loved the session. Full of energy, humor, great stories and awesome/useful information.

Darren was not only informative, but very entertaining. Now, I just need to practice!

Thanks for setting this up for us.”

“I was really impressed with Darren’s talk on personal protection. It gave me lots of good information - things to look out for , etc. He made it very interesting with the examples he gave of everyday life and people and the problems they have encountered. I would recommend it to anyone!”

Debbie Gordon

“I thought it was an awesome seminar. He was very clear and easy to understand as well as entertaining. It’s just too bad some of our staff missed it.”

Lisa Hackwell

“I thought Darren did a great job in presenting. I enjoyed that he didn’t sugar coat anything and appreciate his frankness. I thought the material covered would be helpful for all community members, not just those who deal with the public. I’ll be talking to our summer hiring committee to see if his presentation would be suitable for our summer staff.

Thanks again for hosting and bringing Daren’s presentation to us. It’s a shame that more front line staff weren’t there especially Facility Attendants.”

Sadeep Kera

            Community Recreation Programmer

            Community Services

            Saanich Recreation Services

“Darren’s knowledge of combatives is refreshing and cuts like a laser beam through all the clutter that is now labeled Reality Based Training. He doesn’t sugar coat the ugly truth of violence in the real world. He is constantly learning new innovations and techniques. His training encompasses not only the physical aspects of self protection, but the psychological reasons for them as well. A true innovator in the field.” Ari Bolden-Jujitsu Instructor and Security Professional

“…the course provided value for the time and money I invested in it. I’m confident that the techniques that we learned would be very effective in protecting myself or my loved ones from physical attack…I highly recommend this training to anyone who is serious about being able to protect themselves from a street attack.”

Gary Koett

“The education and training you gave us was empowering and invaluable.”

Victoria Plaza Hotel Staff

“I just wanted to take a moment to acknowledge Cst. Darren Laur for his participation in the CHECK TV segments regarding safety on the streets and child safety. I think he did extremely well in getting a very important message across to tv viewers…I have no doubts that [his] frank discussions will make people aware of the safety issues discussed and perhaps make people think twice.”

Mayor Bob Cross (1996) Victoria BC

“My background is Wing Chun…I do recognize that your course is a superior one. You both are empowering to women through example. I would recommend you to anyone who is thinking about taking such a course.”

Cindy Polutnik

“I took part in the all day FIGHT BACK seminar. I found the workshop extremely useful and empowering…I also wanted to acknowledge the effectiveness of your husband and wife approach. As a woman, I felt encouraged by your resourcefulness and skill. I know that I too can learn effective techniques to protect myself. And even better, I saw them demonstrated.”

Elaine Weidner

“This a just a short note to thank you for the Personal Safety and Management of Aggressive Behaviour in the Workplace seminar you gave.We picked up many important principles to keep in mind to ensure the safety of both out staff and the clients we deal with. [It] should be an essential requirement for anyone who works close contact with the public sector.”

Lynn Cummings, Victoria Hospice Program

“I took his tactical handcuffing and searching seminar when I received my Corrections Officer certification. I’ve been in the security field for 10 years and taken dozens of programs. However, Darren’s course was head and shoulders above them all. He REALLY does know of what he speaks.”

Steven Bydon-Security Professional

“Thanks you for a big shot of reality and the tools to fight back! I can’t thank you enough.”

Jackie

“The seminar that 10 of us women took through your company was absolutely awesome! All of the participants felt the day long course was invaluable. We cannot imagine why we had not done it sooner. As a mother, I could not have spent a more worthwhile day with my 18 year old daughter. I firmly believe that her awareness, confidence and level of understanding has risen to new heights.

“We want to compliment both of you on the professional manner in which you handled yourselves throughout the day. We were impressed by the passion you have for the subject of personal safety.”

Darren, the way you presented the material was clear and easy to understand for all age levels…The hands on practice was VERY realistic without causing undo worry for the participants. You both gave positive feedback to everyone in the group which boosted our confidence in handling ourselves.”

Cathy McKenzie

“The information Darren presented on keeping our kids safe was well received by our staff and we heard many positive comments regarding your presentation and excellent speaking style.”

 Kym Bennent: Superannuation Commission

“Just a short note with a big THANK YOU from all of us at lady fitness. Total Awareness is something everyone needs to know but usually do not go through the measures to learn. We highly recommend Personal Protection Systems to all our members.”

Sandra Clark: Lady Fitness

“I think what you are both doing is so incredible and I think every woman (and even men) should take this program. Before I toook this program, I would have panicked and not had a clue how to get out of the situation. Now I know I would have the brians, and survival skills … to get me out of any situations.”
