In an earlier posting I shared a new Facebook (FB) utility called "Trusted Friends" that can be very useful if you need to recover from a FB hack (account takeover) which is becoming more and more common.
Although Trusted Friends is a great utility, if we could make it harder for a person to hack our FB account, then using the Trusted Friends utility should be a rarity rather than the norm. The good news is that FB offers several security settings to do just that.
1) Opt into https secure browsing https://www.facebook.com/help/?faq=156201551113407#What-is-Secure-Browsing-%28https%29?-What-are-the-benefits?
When you turn this feature on, it encrypts everything you do thus making harder for others to access your FB information without your permission.
2) Opt into Login Notifications https://www.facebook.com/help/?faq=162968940433354#What-are-Login-Notifications? This is a security feature that notifies you anytime someone attempts to access your account from a new device (computer, smartphone, tablet). To set Login Notifications:
- go to your security settings page
- click on the Login Notification section
- click on the type of alert you would like to receive and save your changes. If you want to be notified via your cell phone you will have to provide a number
3) Opt into Login Approvals https://www.facebook.com/help/?faq=148233965247823#What-is-Login-Approvals? Each time you attempt to access your FB account from an unrecognized device, you will have to enter a security code (that FB will send to your mobile phone) that you will have to enter to gain access. To set Login Approvals:
- go to your security settings page
- click on the Login Approval section
- check the box and save your changes
If your FB has been hacked even though you have followed the above noted steps and have attempted the "Trusted Friends" application, then head to this FB page: https://www.facebook.com/hacked
